Why Material Matters for Essential Oils Essential oils are highly concentrated, volatile, and many contain strong active ingredients. The wrong container material may cause chemical reactions, leakages, or degrade the oil’s scent and efficacy. Selecting proper bottles protects your essential oil formula and extends shelf life.

Common Materials for Essential Oil Bottles

1. Amber / Cobalt Blue Glass (Most Recommended)

Glass is inert and will not react with most essential oils. Amber and dark blue glass blocks UV light effectively, preventing photo-oxidation that ruins fragrance and active components. Best for: Pure essential oils, serums, aromatic blends. Note: Glass is fragile, ideal for retail and small batch cosmetic brands.

2. Aluminium Bottles

Aluminium offers excellent barrier performance against oxygen and light. Lightweight, shatterproof, and supports custom surface finishing like anodizing, printing or laser logo. Best for: Travel-sized essential oils, outdoor use, premium aromatherapy brands. Note: Inner coating is required to avoid direct contact between metal and oil.

3. Plastic Bottles (Limited Use Only)

Not all plastics work for essential oils. PET: Suitable for diluted essential oil blends only. Not recommended for 100% pure essential oils, as strong oil may corrode PET over time. PS / Acrylic: Easy to crack under essential oil erosion, generally NOT suggested for essential oil storage. Best for: Diluted oil spray blends, low-concentration aromatherapy products.
